Hey Burners!!

I'm trying to get the money together to get a ticket to Burning Man 2010, but before I do I wanted to see if there were any groups in/around the Memphis, TN area (or not, even) that want/would be willing/are cool with a tag along.

The tag along would be me, of course.  I would love to go to Burning Man but have been told that it's rather difficult to go by yourself.  So I'm looking for a group to go with.

A little about me:  I'm female, 24 (25 in Feb!!). I'm crafty -- I knit, sew, write, take pictures, and occasionally cook (among other things).  I love camping and outdoorsy activities.  One of my biggest goals is to be a self sufficient, off the grid homesteader.  I am Pagan.  I love to give out free hugs!  I have an addiction to office supplies and have tons of notebooks, crayons, pens, and pencils.  I'm a nerd and love to play D&D and other games.  I am also a Master Gardener with the Memphis area Master Gardeners (through the University of Tennessee extension office).  I taught for two years with public schools but work in catering now.

I'd be more than happy to contribute as needed and where possible.

If you're interested in this, or know someone that is, (or even have advice!) please email me!

Who is the Cookieman and why is he giving away money?

In the fall of 2008 some guy brought 526 fresh baked chocolate chip cookies
to the Playa del Fuego festival in Odessa, Delaware. He proceeded to make
LOTS of friends giving them away all weekend. He earned himself the name
“Cookieman.” In the spring of 2009 he and his minions baked up 777 CCCs and
gave them away at PDF. More friends were made. This got Cookieman thinking.
“Maybe I should sell these cookies at my pizza shop” he said to himself. But
Cookieman just couldn’t bring himself to charge people for the cookies…even
at his pizza shop in far away NH. “The cookies have been a gift and should
remain a gift.” Somewhere in the summer of 2009 while planning his Burning
Man trip Cookieman got the idea to sell the cookies for $1.25 each and save
the $1 profit to go into a scholarship fund to send one lucky east coast
burner to Burning Man 2010! Thus making each cookie sold a most fantastic
gift!

The average cost of a burning man trip from the east coast is about $1000.
With ticket cost, flight, food, &supplies...it’s easy to spend that and
more… trust us! So 1000cookies gets you $1000! So why not 1000 questions on
the application for this scholarship?

Yup…1000 questions! These questions were collected mostly at Burning Man
2009 and at PDF Fall 2009 and some collected from friends and relatives and
anyone else that would pay attention. You can imagine the ‘interesting’
nature of some of these questions. Basically the only requirement for a
questions was that it end with a ? so yeah.. good luck!

David Letterman Show Promotes Trans Disgust

The David Letterman show on the CBS network has insulted Amanda Simpson, a trans woman who was recently appointed to the U.S. Commerce Department by the Obama administration. In the clip below David Letterman announces the news, followed by a guest on his show who breaks out in shock that "Amanda used to be a dude" the man is disgusted and outraged and runs off stage, the segment insinuates the man had some sort of relationship with Simpson and reinforces the sentiment that being transgender is somehow disgusting, misleading, and abnormal.

The video clip, other remarks by Letterman on LGBT issues and ways to contact the show are available below:

Influences on survey responses due to elapsed time

Does anybody know if there is some citable research into survey bias due to elapsed time after the event being asked about? We need to compare customer service related surveys that are done immediately after a customer-service event with surveys that are done a week or two afterwards. There are some immediately obvious answers that anyone who knows brains can come up with, but is there any research that actually investigated this stuff, or a similar-enough phenomenon that I can say "What the research says is..."?

A must-join community if you are, or love, a feminist. (NB: the topic of whether a "man" can be a feminist is outside the scope of this spotlight, but will probably wind up on the Writer's Block.)

seeking advice

Well, I have been meaning to seek advice on this for a while, so here it is. I am highly interested in the mind and how it works. I am also highly interested in psychedelics, the unconsciousness, and many other things that are of similar topics. I want a career where I would be able to experiment and research these things. Hopefully, run experiments on other human and animal subjects, as well as myself. M.A.P.S.(multidisciplinary association for psychedelic studies) is an example of an organization I would love to work with. I've noticed there is a field of psychology called Experimental Psychology. Is this the path I take towards my career goal? if it is, where can I find schools that have this program? also, is this the field I should be going for? or, should I be going towards a completely different field?

Any advice and help is greatly appreciated. Also, if any of you had any recommendations of things I should read or get into that you think i may be interested in, I'm all open ears.

Hi, I'm only thirteen, still in Secondary school but I have real passion for psychology. I was wondering if anybody had any ideas or 'tips'that could help me to get ahead, so to speak, of my classmates.

Thanks, Evie. x

"At least bi."

Have you ever been discussing with your friends about a mutual friend or acquaintance and you get to the other person's sexual orientation--at which point someone says, "Oh, (s)he's gay. Or at least bi"? This could happen because you know the other person has dated someone of the same sex, or simply because (s)he sets off the gaydar or bidar.

Why do we say that? I'm guilty of it. I've said it a number of times. I've heard my friends say it.

On the one hand, I guess it's good, because it's recognizing bisexuality and it acknowledges that not only gay people can like people of the same sex.

On the other hand, it makes out bisexuals to be like "lesser" gays.

Have any of you heard people say this? What do you think about it?

Haha take that

This is an awesome response to Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" called:

"I Didn't Just Kiss Her," by Jen Foster.  A lyric is "I didn't just kiss her, I went all the way, and I liked it."

For those of you who share my thoughts on Katy Perry, enjoy.

The Bisexual Dilemma

So since it's been a while since anybody except that Lezzie Porno dude wrote something, I thought I'd bring up this issue.  Perhaps it's redundant, but I don't wanna have the latest post on our community to be slash fiction.

Say you're a girl.  You date another girl.  The GLBT community welcomes and applauds you, you are a true bisexual free to fight for the Community and make educated decisions and views.
Now say you date a guy.  You're now straight.  You enjoy all the benefits of heterosexuality so you must be one and gawd forbid you want to get married.  Traitor!  GLBT matters shouldn't concern you anymore, breeder.

I had a lesbian friend say "What do you care?" when I was excited Idaho had allowed gay marriage.  I hadn't ever been as offended by a friend.

This is what I deal with along with many other bi girls who are with a XY.  This makes me furious for a few reasons:
  1. So if I'm straight when I'm dating a man, am I asexual when I'm single?  No because sexuality is an inherent part of me.  It's like my shoe-size or my blood-type.  I get some people are more fluid but for me it's part of who I am and who I am is not who I am with.
  2. I'm 90% dyke so when I hear that I'm straight all of a sudden it makes me furious to think of the barsexuals who get praised for making out with one girl once (Katy Perry anyone?).
  3. Pretend I was the straightest thing in the world.  I am still allowed to care about LGBT issues.  Where would any minority movement be without majority support?
I've been with a man for over a year.  I love him more than I've loved anyone or could ever imagine loving another.  Have I become more straight since then?  Well let's see.  I have never jerked off to images/thoughts of men, I get highly uncomfortable with hetero fanfiction/porn/erotica, I think women are the most beautiful creatures and just thinking about them makes me frisky...hmm nope "Straight-O-Meter" isn't really goin' off that much.

EDIT://

If a woman is bi and is with a woman--she is still bi.  She is not a lesbian because she is in "a lesbian relationship."
If a woman is bi and is with a man--she is still bi.  She is not straight because she is in a "heterosexual relationship."
